Abstract

This presentation questions whether it is possible to use computational methods to identify and characterise the concept of kitsch, which is by its nature elusive. The work is based on images published and shared on the French blog platform Skyblog and draws on the collections of the BnF web archives. Using supervised and unsupervised visual analysis tools, the presentation offers a historical exploration of the digital aesthetics of the French-speaking web in the early 2000s.
